Did women play music?

Only for fun. Ladies were expected to be able to play a keyboard instrument, such as the harpsichord, the spinet or the virginals. Gentlemen played the lute or the viol. It was not seen as decent for a woman to play as her job but women probably made music at home with the family. There are one or two records of women being apprenticed to a Wait but they may just have been having music lessons, or may have been household servants.
